Different technologies exist today, but all the most known batteries use lithium-based batteries. What really matter are the other components associated to the Lithium.
Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC), commonly used in smartphones, laptops or electric cars, is also used into some domestic batteries. This technology offers the benefit of taking little space, which is essential for those mobile devices, but last less long and is less safe than Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), which is the toughest type of lithium battery around. LiFePO4 batteries degrade more slowly than other lithium batteries, giving them a longer lifespan, and they are the lithium battery least likely to catch fire, which is a useful safety advantage. In recent years, some plane crashes have been attributed to some Li-on batteries taking on fire, pushing airlines all around the world to forbid such batteries shipment.
Additionally, LiFePO4 is the only battery component that can be naturally sourced and does not contain any toxic heavy metals. This is something important for you when you choose a battery to consume more renewables and protect the environment. The sonnenBatterie uses Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) technology.
Battery manufacturers mainly communicate on the battery storage capacity, but the most important indicators are the number of cycles and the depth of discharge the battery is designed for. These two factors combined will help you assess the life-span of your battery, which is dependent on the technology used. Of course, your battery needs to be properly sized to your storage needs.
